How do I set the home or default page for my website?

The home or default page is the first page that is displayed to any visitor when they type your domain name in their web browser. To set a particular page as your home page, you need to name it as any of the following:

Windows Hosting Linux Hosting

  • index.html

  • index.htm

  • index.shtml

  • index.asp

  • index.aspx

  • default.html

  • default.htm

  • default.shtml

  • default.asp

  • default.aspx

  • home.html

  • home.htm

  • home.shtml

  • home.asp

  • home.aspx

  • index.html

  • index.htm

  • index.php

  • index.php3

  • index.php4

  • index.shtml

  • default.html

  • default.htm

  • default.php

  • home.html

  • home.htm

  • home.php

  • index.pl

  • home.pl

  • default.pl

When there is a request for your website, the server will look for any of the above files, and if available, display it as your home page.

IMPORTANT

The order specified above is important when it comes to setting your home page. In the unlikely event that you have used more than one of the above file names on your website, the same order will be followed for selection of the home page. So, if you have a file named index.htm as well as a file named home.html, then index.htm will be your home page.

Setting your own default pages order

You can specify your own default pages order under Windows Hosting. Follow the instructions listed below to achieve this:

  1. Login to your Control Panel, search for the domain name for which you have purchased this Windows Hosting package and proceed to the Order Details view. Click here to read how >>

  2. Click on Manage Web Hosting Service in the lower toolbar.

  3. In the Website Management interface pop-up that follows, go to Manage Website -> Default Page Manager.

  4. The default pages order can be managed as mentioned below:

Adding a page to the default pages list

Specify in the Add New Default Page field, the file name which you wish add to the default pages list and click the Add button. You may add as many pages as you wish to this list.

    IMPORTANT

    • Only .htm, .html, .shtml, .asp and .aspx extensions can be used for pages to be added in the default pages list.

    • The file name (including the extension) should not exceed 20 characters.

    Modifying the default pages order

You may modify the order of the default pages by selecting a filename and using the Move Up/Move Down button.

    IMPORTANT

The order specified is important when it comes to setting your home page. In the unlikely event that you have used more than one of the specified file names on your website, the same order will be followed for selection of the home page.

Removing a page from the default pages list

If so desired, a page can be removed from the default pages list by selecting the filename and then clicking the Remove button.

  5. Click the Submit button to save the changes.
